本書では「機能範疇パラメータ化の仮説」（Fukui 1986, 1988他）の一部である、「機能範疇における一致素性の有無が、言語間のパラメトリックな差異をもたらす」という主張を支持することを目指す。日本語にはレキシコンの中に [uφ]（不与値の人称、数、性（φ）素性）が存在せず、そのことが日英語を中心とするいくつかのパラメトリックな差異をもたらすと主張する。本書は、全体として「外在化仮説」（Boeckx 2016他）に対する反論を提供することになる。
