Summary
Improving listening comprehension in an EFL (English as a Foreign Language) context is quite difficult for two reasons. First, it is because there are much fewer opportunities for EFL learners to listen to the target language outside the classroom, compared to those in an ESL (English as a Second Language) context. The second reason is the phonological differences between the learners' first language and English. Even though it has long been said that there is a need to develop an effective and applicable methodology or instruction to improve listening skills in the EFL context, especially in Japan, it remains to be seen. Therefore, this book tries to develop a new listening methodology for English learners, especially Japanese, who are struggling with improving their listening comprehension. The new methodology is named visual-auditory shadowing, which is developed by blending past research findings of the shadowing method and cognitive psychology perspectives. This book attempts to verify this new method. I hope this book can contribute to the improvement of listening skills of EFL learners, especially those of Japanese learners. (Preface on page v)
