Summary
One of the main topics of Generative Grammar has been the presentation of a principled explanation to the Subject Condition, which prohibits extraction of a wh-phrase out of a subject. Many explanations have been proposed and they have become more ingenious as the frameworks have become more elaborate. However, there seems to remain some phenomena that are problematic. This book reanalyzes the Subject Condition in the framework of Minimalism and provides a more comprehensive theory encompassing the phenomena that the previous analyses cannot adequately explain. This book also provides a unified approach to extraction of wh-phrase both from a subject and from an object.
