最適性理論の枠組みを用いて、古英語から現代英語までの語順の変化を再ランキングにより分析する。特に、再ランキングのメカニズムに焦点を置き、制約の相互作用の観点から解明を図る。音韻論や統語論の制約を取り上げ、制約の相互作用は潜在的相互作用と活性相互作用に分類でき、ランキングによって活性相互作用が異なることを指摘する。そして再ランキングは、制約間の相互作用が活性化されるときのみ可能であると提案する。
