Summary

This collection of seven essays covering a wide range of historical periods from Old English to the twentieth century, is the eighth volume in the series Studies in the History of the English Language. It is the first product of a research project on the history of English expression in literature as a new perspective in historical stylistics. As a first step in this project we have focused our attention on a chronological and comparative study of body language in English and American literature. Our aim is to contribute toward the establishment of a whole system and functions of body language in the history of English expression in literature. (excerpts from "Preface" by Masahiro Hori)
